    correction on (2). I meant to say that the Torah is in a casing and the casing is facing away from the congregation . Turning right first will display the writing to the right first.

  • a couple of mistakes:

    1. Sefardim do hagbah. Indeed, the Shulchan Oruch describes hagbah according to the Sefardic tradition.

    2. The writing is shown to the right first, and to the left afterwards. If you turn right first, you are showing the writing to the left side first!

    The description in the Shulchan Oruch of turning to the south first comes from the fact that hagbah is done by facing the congregation. Ashkenaz don't.

  • Actually, Sefaradim DO hagbaha as well! The difference is that Sefaradim do the hagbaha before the torah reading, not after.
