Well, open source video recording and editing has come a long way recently, and if you use the right programs, you can get pleasing results :)
GLC is a program that works similarly to Fraps. It's not very well known, but once you learn how to use it, it works amazingly well. https://github.com/nullkey/glc
A Wiki page I made on how to use it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GLC
If you want to try Linux go here: http://ubuntu.com
Kdenlive is a video editor for KDE. Right now it's probably one of the best editors for Linux (keep an eye on Pitivi though! I almost used that but it doesn't support audio mixing yet. It's very good though). http://www.kdenlive.org/ and here's pitivi: http://www.pitivi.org/wiki/Main_Page
Song is Stars by Switchfoot (edited the volume levels a bit with Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ )

Most Netbooks right now run a specialize version of Linux. If you want the full Linux experience I would suggest a computer with a 3D video card and a little more powerful than a Netbook. Otherwise go at it. There are great machines.
