The distinction first arose during the nineteenth century, when Scottish Whisky was in the process of moving over to a continuous distillation process, and was therefore a slightly different drink from Irish Whiskey.
As it happened not all Scotch moved over to the new method - but since the distinction had arisen, English kept it.
I remain impressed by how willing Americans are to accept nonsense.

I only drink american Whiskey (Bourbon), like Jack Daniels or Jim Beam and I mix it with Cola. I like the taste f it.
