I have heard that the sun can shine about 1 KW of heat energy on every meter squared of area on a good shiny day.
to do a proper BTU test with a water reservoir the following things must be taken into account:
the heat collector must be well insulated and its heat loss rate must be known
the heat exchanger must be efficient and its efficiency must be known.
the water in the reservoir must be well insulated and the rate of heat loss must be known
if you take all of the above into account you can obtain a BTU measure by multiplying the temperature rise by the mass by the heat capacity of water ,
