Building a hoophouse - part two - with Adam Montri

Michigan State University hoophouse specialist Adam Montri and his wife Dru put up their own passive solar greenhouse at their Ten Hens Farm in Michigan. Part 2 of this three-part series on Sustainable Farmer.com shows the Montris and their friends working on the polycarbonate endwalls and installing the two layers of polyethylene that cover the hoophouse. Dr. John Biernbaum of MSU's Student Organic Farm also offers tips.;

What do you think about setting up a hoop house in the Caribbeans? we are moving to the islands and will be doing farming. Of course the weather is 70's low and 90'shigh.Most of the year its in the high70's. Would suggest using this technique?

@iGotemApp The only use for a hoophouse in your environment would be to protect plants that might be damaged by heavy rain. There are fruit growers using high tunnels to protect cherries from cracking from heavy weather. But most uses involved protecting plants from the cold, which is certainly not your problem.

@olyhoun Adam is a specialist at Michigan State University who sometimes has grant funding to help various kinds of hoophouse farmers with specific projects in the state. You can contact him to see if you might qualify. He might also know firms that specialize in constructing hoophouses.

i understand that the polycarb ends come with the kit from RIMOL, but i'm having a little difficulty here in rural northeast mississippi finding such pieces local. is there a website that you prefer that sells the polycarb panels at a reasonable price. thanks! and very nice greenhouse!

I've found prices at LOWE's to be generally cheaper than HOME DEPOT. But STACY with comment #48 at albertahomegardening.moc could remind of NASCAR & Jimmie KENneth Johnson (b. SEP. 17, 1975) driving the #48 car (co-owned by RICK HENdRICK), with main sponsor LOWE's. On Jimmie Johnson's 24th birthday, Hurricane Floyd flooding was sinking LOWE'S at 700 N. Most people associate building a hoophouse with a healthier lifestyle. But for a minuscule few, sticking around to build and maintain a hoophouse could lead to physical peril.
