Title: SOIREE
Duration: 8 MINUTES
Location: Neon Hall, Nagano City, Japan
Date: August 5, 2007

Artists Concept:

SOIREE was conceptualized on the last leg of the tour during my stay in Nagano City, Japan. I thought of coming up with the title in relation to a chant that i kept on hearing on the street festival the night before my presentation. It was the Binzuru Festival which is held every 1st Saturday of August. The largest of Nagano's local festivals. Many groups of dancers take to the streets to dance and gyrate with rice scoops in their hands. And as they sway they kept on shouting & chanting a word which to me sounded like 'SOIREE' (a French word meaning evening party).

This performance I did at the Neon Hall in Nagano City is a continuation of my "found sound project" in relation to the art making process of "found objects installation art".
Which I've started in 2005 during Moro's PIPAF event at the Cubao X. Wherein, I collect pieces of field recordings within the given environment, capture the particular character of that place. Put them together seamlessly in one audio loop application, and make use of it as part of a performative piece, like jamming with it. And since the beat somehow created a dance-able tune. I decided to ask one of the NIPAF staff Shohei Nomoto to interact with the sound that I am making. And invite another participant Booj Vetro of Romania to work on the static sound.

The purpose of this piece was primarily my quest to coax or persuade, initiate, mingle and interact with the given environment, the people around it. And strike a liking for that universal language we call music. As a Filipino I was exposed to love music at an early stage. And sure enough Pinoys happens be one of the top exported musicians and entertainers around the globe. Names like Leah Salonga, and Freddie Aguilar heads the lists.

'Soiree' and the rest of my series of sound art related project...is my homage to music. It's therapeutic appeal touches our hearts in so many ways.
