Fritz-Pak Fill Flow, our admixture for producing flowable fill, dramatically increases air content and flowability. It has grown tremendously in popularity, even during the recession. The reason for this is two-fold: the use of flowable fill is increasing in the industry, and Fill flow has technical advantages over competing products. Fill Flow entrains more air, is more predictable, and is easier to use than other admixtures.

Flowable fill, a mixture of sand, cement, water and admixtures, has been in use for many years in the concrete construction industry. It is also known as Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) and Excavatable Backfill. The NRMCA has long promoted it because it provides the Ready Mix Producer with an alternate use of their equipment, and flowable fill is a much better product than compacted fill (dirt).

Using flowable fill eliminates the need for compaction. Other materials require compacting the soil in layers, which must be done at a certain moisture content. Dirt cannot be compacted when its too dry or too wet. However, flowable fill, can be placed in any weather, even when its raining. It does not compact further after placement, so repaving of street cuts can be done quickly. The paving will not subside over time. Even properly compacted soil will usually continue to compact further over time, leading to unnecessary and expensive street repairs later.

Using flowable fill is a safer construction practice. When you excavate, and need to have workers going into trenches to compact the soil, some OSHA regulations regarding working in confined spaces become applicable. It is much easier to fill trenches with flowable fill, without the need for compaction or putting workers in dangerous situations.
