Note: It appears that the Westminister chimes are out of sync and start on the fourth bar of the fourth quarter hour. It took me a while to realize they were off and I do not intend to do anything about it as other than that they are OK.

197(?) Emperor Clock Company Model 120 with Jauch model 100M movement.
My father and brother started building this Grandfather's clock in the late seventies. The unfinished clock sat in pieces in my garage for over 27 years; I am surprised it survived.

We decided to work on it in April of 2010 and finally finished it February 15, 2011. I had to mill two missing hood pieces but other than that the wooden parts went together smoothly.

I had to build a test stand to adjust the movement and chimes as parts were bent and out of adjustment from storage. The movement was in the test stand for several weeks as I adjusted the beat and made the chimes sound at the proper hours. When we installed the movement in the case it ran without any problem.

  • That’s great that you and your father built so many clocks. I would like to build another from a kit and might do that one of these days.

Am I right about my chimes being out of sync? I almost bought a movement on Ebay so I could look at it and figure out how that could happen. I am not interested in taking my movement out of the case because it is running well.

  • My dad and I built this clock in 1972 from a kit, our first of many. We built a total of 7 grandfather clocks over the years and numerous wall, mantle and bracket clocks. Learned a lot about clocks as well as furniture finishing. A very rewarding hobby.

  • we just got one like yours. we are still adjusting it.
