This is a marchers' perspective from the pedestrian walkway on the Brooklyn Bridge as police block the protesters who followed police officers onto the Brooklyn-bound traffic side of the bridge. Many other protesters, including myself, walked onto the pedestrian walkway and then stood by to support them as the cops pushed and shoved the peaceful protesters back and began cherry-picking people to arrest. Eventually they came from both sides (Brooklyn and Manhattan sides) of the bridge, blocking anyone from getting out (leaving). Some resorted to climbing the bridge up to the pedestrian walkway to avoid arrest, while the rest of the crowd mic-checked and organized to sit down and hold their ground.

An ever-changing, but okay ("meh.") coverage of what happened between police and protesters by the NYTimes:

To set the record straight - I went on the walkway, but I was even confused about which path to take initially. Police did not tell us where we could/could not go - a fellow organizer told my friends and I to "go this way [the walkway] if you don't want to risk arrest." Many did not have the benefit of hearing this organizer make this announcement...

Also, here is a link to a video recording the police LEADING the front of the march onto the bridge:

Here is a great blog article about how the "freedom to assemble" is greatly limited. The 99% remarkably make do with what little freedom they actually have...

  • @thehup21 the cops deliberately deceived the protesters into the street. there were SO many cops and not ONE told me to move off the street. i moved to the walkway only after a protest organizer suggested it.

  • @thisheartisfluid how did this bridge protest end? Did the cops leave?

  • @jmacri the cops arrested about 700 of these people on the bridge. the brooklyn bridge was shut down until about 8:30pm during this time. they brought in buses to bus the arrested people out to precincts across the city. the rest of the protesters who didn't take the street walked the walkway to Brooklyn or back to Manhattan. the cops cleared once the arrested protesters were taken away.

  • @MrOTLChamp as i said idiot GET FUCKING USED TO IT

  • All you protesters are morons. You are all puppets at best. You idiots are protesting against wall street and the banks about bail-out money? Dumbasses, Who in the hell do you morons think gave them the money? The Damn government stupids! Most of the banks even were refusing taking any money, but the government forced them to take it. Most has already been paid back by the banks. Try protesting government, like the obviously smarter Tea Party group.
