As a young woman in the German Democratic Republic, Ilse, now 79, watched in disbelief as the communists began to raise the Wall in Berlin.

Her daughter, Dorothea, was to live for more than two decades in a divided country under communist control.

After listening to the stories they have to tell, Dorothea's daughter Salome, wishes to experience the divisions that the Wall brought about just for a day.

Al Jazeera's David Chater reports from Berlin on how three generations of Germans view the Wall.
