Second day Masters 2007, hole 18, late in the afternoon. 'Is that legal?' asks Peter Alliss of Ken Brown when he sees the lonely bag of Phil on the tee.

  • This is illegal. Decision 14-2/2.5 is the exact situation:

Q a player positions his golf bag near the teeing ground for the purpose of blocking the sunglight from the position where he tees his ball. he then makes a stroke. Is he in breach of rule 24.2

    A. yes. As the player was not in contact with the golf bag, he accepted protection from the elements.

  • Who cares if he has his bag on the tee...jeez. It is not hurting the tee and if it falls over (I'm sure it will be fine barring a random gust of strong wing) it is his own problem.

  • Where do we draw the line? Is wearing a cap protecting your eyes from the sun illegal? What's the difference?

  • This is legal because of intent. He was not trying to protect himself from the elements (in this case the sun). He was protecting himself from distraction caused by the shadows of the gallery.

  • Phil looks like Shrek there

  • Yes, it is legal.

  • On second thought. Maybe there should be a new decision.

  • Seems it would fall into existing decision (14-2/3).
