you need a sound source first. the zendrum is only a controller. Then that can be connected to an amplifier. If you're using for live performance, it is very helpful to have an on stage monitor in addition to being in the house system.

should I buy one? i'm a keyboard player, but i want to get in on the perc-action
Is it USB or midi only? I'm also going to be acquiring a Muse Receptor over the next year or so, so would it work?

The muse receptor should work although I've never used one so I can't give any advice with regards to performance or latency. The zendrum is a midi controller... no USB connections however with a USB interface, you can run midi in that way. The zendrum will give you great accuracy (depending on how you play of course) and control over velocity. You'll have a lot of fun with it!
