@kiiifute1 I can think of millions of things to do in my life that are safer than driving an IndyCar or a Formula 1 car, so I wouldn't call them the "safest" of activities. Driving on the roadways with amateurs is obviously more dangerous because you don't have the equipment race drivers do, you have a tiny rope and a couple air bags. People wouldn't have to die on the roads if other people weren't stupid, but unfortunately stupidity is very evident in today's world.
However, most viewing here aren't going to tolerate a 20 pg treatise on lang & linguistics from me nor any1 else,4 that matter- ALAS I concede to the whims of the gallery, otherwise Sheldon & his comrades R the TRUE amateurs & the rest of us R the proS
"True fan of motorsport"? Formula 1 or even "Indy Car" esp at this level are some of the safest activities EVEN "professional" football aka the "NFL",while far more perilous than racing
@F1V1 If the word "amateur" is to be strictly, literally and PROPERLY interpreted ESPECIALLY in this particular context--then I would have used it to refer to those that have a passion for driving and would be engaged regardless of whether or not they derived monetary rewards-- CONT
@kiiifute1 If you're a true fan of motorsport you aren't in it specifically for the money. Dan Wheldon was there because he enjoyed racing just like every other driver in the IndyCar paddock. Death is a part of auto racing and you won't find that in sports like the NFL or NBA. Racing is a sport, because it's not just your trip up to the grocery store you're traveling 200+ MPH. Anyone that has ever experienced that in real life or on a simulator can tell you it's difficult.
The deadly "sport" is taking place , each and every day, out on the Nation's highways.
35 to 40 thousand deaths annually USA road fatalities
1 direct motor-sport fatality --"once in a blue-moon"
Not to minimize the Sheldon family's suffering but, at least, the man was being paid handsomely to get behind the wheel--along with other professionals I might add
I & millions of others risk life & limb on the public road-ways, daily, with "amateurs"

This is not the crash. It was 15 cars. But may he RIP.

The crash that he died in was much worse than this, it involved more cars, flames and his death.
Who'd have known though, 8 years after this...RIP Dan Wheldon
