@nzsss You're probably right about "to the victor go the spoils." War's a nasty business. People who've never been near a battlefield really don't know what you have to do. But I know even today if someone messes with your unit, there's going to be hell to pay. That's outside of the normal front.

@msblatzrox Yes, but only Peiper and his men were ever held accountable. How come the Americans responsible were never held accountable for the massacre. Also, over 200 men? More than at Malmedy. Is it a case of "to the victor goes the spoils"!! Seems like double standards to me. I guess if it was revenge, as you put it, then the Germans should not have been held accountable for taking revenge on partisans in Russia, who tortured and brutally murdered German prisoners!!

Whenever Peiper is raised in conversation, history or anything to do with the Ardennes offensive, the massacre at Malmedy is raised. If any of you Peiper critics, or indeed admirers of this man, want to read about a massacre of 200 Waffen SS grenadiers from 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division Götz von Berlichingen, then google Wikipedia and look up this division. There is a shocking story that was obviously hushed up by the Americans.

@nonameposter die wenigsten waren echte nazis, das ist das traurige daran...ich bewundere ihren mut, nicht ihre ideologie. der nazionalsozialismus hat sie dazu gebracht, wehrloses menschenleben auszulöschen. keine ihrer taten kann ich verteidigen.

mein großvater musste auch für die nazis einrücken, aber er kam als einer der wenigen lebend zurück. seit dem d-day ist er in unserer gemeinde gegen rechtsextremismus tätig. dafür bewundere ich ihn, denn er steht zu seinen taten...
