Construction on the Boston University Bridge limits access for all travelers including motorized vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. The Massachusetts DCR (Department of Conservation and Recreation) knows about these conditions, yet they refuse to include safety accommodations in their multi-year plan for bridge rehabilitation.
This video documents some bridge hazards that bicycle commuters face. You will note that most of the drivers are careful about sharing the road. But bicycles remain marginally visible and vulnerable on the roadway.
The City of Cambridge and citizens of Boston and Brookline demand a plan for bridge safety during construction. Improved lighting, traffic calming measures, designated bicycle lanes, and enforcement personnel will make the BU Bridge a safer place for thousands of daily commuters.
too dangerous here, no technical perfection at all.
