Protests for and against Mauritania's coup - 07 Aug 08

Security forces in Mauritania have used force to disperse crowds, protesting against the leaders of the military coup.

The generals who removed the president and prime minister from power on Wednesday, have promised to hold free and fair elections, as soon as possible.

On the streets of the capital, rallies have been held both for and against the coup.

Our correspondent, Mohamed Vall reports from Nouakchott.

Why seek the assistance of non-Muslims? Mauritania is a Muslim country. Every able bodied Muslim male should have shown up to drive these fiends out of power and to defend their ruler. Surely their lack of action (and lack of iman) will only open the door to more and more tyrants and despots to rule over them (see the other "Muslim" countries)

You are right in this instance, there is no power or movement if not by the will of Allah. And whomever Allah brings to power Allah can also bring him low.

I also think this coup was ridiculous after the democratic election that took place. Right now a system of nepostism exists in Maurtiania. More intellectuals within this country should try to reform this obviously corrupt system even if they have to seek assistance from the outside world, such as the U.N.

It's been done here in the U.S.
