Sandii is now a full Kumu Hula from Pattye Kealohalani Wright. This video shows the first step of that journey. The new haumana (student) is presented by her teacher as a candidate for eventual 'uniki (graduation) to the hula community at a public function. This function was the Prince Lot Hula Festival. Also on stage was hula sister Pumehana. This clip is posted with the permission of its private owners.

  • 24makaala - Please read the writeup again. This is the start of Sandii's training, not its completion. She was always a beautiful dancer. Check her Pua Lililehua from 4 years earlier. Here she was far enough into her ‘ōlapa training to be presented on-stage. It was another 5 intense years and all 3 levels of traditional ‘ūniki before she became Kumu Hula. I have heard of Kumu Hula claiming the title after taking little more than workshops, but not here and not Pattye Wright.

  • Is Pumehana holding the gourd incorrectly?

  • I've seen this Kumu & her group many times on windward side. They're just ok. The title Kumu Hula is so sacred...but it looks like Pattye Wright hands out the title to anyone who takes 10 classes. Disgraceful. Just knowing it was for 'uniki...that kahiko hula was painful to watch.

  • great presentation . . .. . thanks for posting this
