  • @monpitt500 Yes, you are right - the choral singers sound fine in themselves. It's just that the piece might seem to manage even better without them.

    If you'd like to listen to the Caruso recording of this song, with the composer Percy Kahn and Mischa Elman playing a very simple accompaniment, you might see how relatively well it sounds.

  • What the hell? The choir part is nice!!

  • Despite the unnecessary and slightly irritating distraction of an inserted choir the recording is very enjoyable to hear,Tauber alternating effectively between the sweetly lyrical and the passionately dramatic.

    It is interesting to speculate whether there might be a market demand for a Tauber CD of his singing devotional pieces, including settings of the 'Ave Maria' - this one, his earlier German made recordings of it, plus the Schubert and Bach-Gounod versions.
