In 1813 an inconspicuous graduate of the University of Edinburgh's Faculty of Medicine -- James Barry joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. His exceptional talent and enthusiasm for work soon won him admiration and recognition among co-workers. He rose through the ranks. In his 46 years of service James traveled across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and North America. Wherever this frail physician set foot, conditions in field hospitals improved significantly. Completely devoted to his work, Barry never founded a family and his only companions were his faithful servant and his black poodle Psyche. When he retired he returned to England, where he died in 1865. Paradoxically, it was only after his death that he became one of the most famous personalities of the Victorian England. The women preparing him for burial were astonished to discover that the highly respected citizen, renowned surgeon and officer had been hiding an incredible secret... He was a woman. James Barry, or -- according to many sources -- Miranda Stuart, despite an absolute ban on women practicing the medical profession had successfully completed university education and went on to become one of the best surgeons of her time. Years later, a few of Miranda's coworkers from the military admitted that they had discovered James Barry's true identity but kept it secret for his patients' sake.
