High Hopes

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begin

Along the long road and on down the causeway
Do they still meet there by the cut

There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The night of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide

At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

Enumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many time

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever

  • This is, in my opinion, the saddest song ever made. Moreover, it's the last song on the album "Division Bell". No one really understanding the song can stay without shedding one or two manly tears in the dephts of the night.

  • The only song that beats this is Comfortably Numb. Floyd will never be touched in terms of the number of songs that truly stand out among the crowd. Most bands have about 4 or 5 if lucky; Floyd has about 50 or more.

  • Listening and watching this...I think I just felt the meaning of life.

  • As David Gilmore Said, "I may not play fast, but I sure can play each note" and by god, how right he is.

  • When this song ends I feel that the music ends forever and ever

  • @NuclearFaIIout It turns it from rough and boring to a pleasure

  • @NuclearFaIIout Meeee, so me

  • The ringing of the division bell had begun

  • @NuclearFaIIout Yes, but I usually end up focusing more on the music than on what I'm supposed to be studying.

  • time moves slower and balls appear bigger
