Dean Radin, PhD, IONS' Senior Scientist, discusses scientific topics which are considered taboos to discuss publicly. Some taboos are transitory; as controversy passes away, concepts that were once taboo have been proven to be valid.
when did science become about dogma instead of discovery :/

@MagiMysteryTour the Idea of interstellar travel is not taboo it is discussed quite often because privately some people may be of the opinion that we can never get to another planet dose not make the subject Taboo for it to be taboo it would not be talked about at all, some people may think we will never get there but this idea is hardly taboo one dose not "scientifically prove" as you put it interstellar space travel its a technological barrier

On the other hand, if the question of the conceivability that we may one day, like the sound barrier on Earth, be able to break the distance barrier between solar systems, has not been conclusively proven or resolved, then we might expect to be seeing at least a modicum of discussion and debate on the topic. I assert that there is a very noticeable lack of such debate, and that in the absence of irrefutable scientific resolution, this lack of debate amounts to a an effective taboo.

@phoboskitty According to you, I am mistaken in alleging there is a taboo against discussing the impossibility of reaching other planets. There is no such taboo, according to you, and the only problem is the inaccuracy of my assertion. The only reason, therefore, for the lack of debate on this topic, is that it has been conclusively proven scientifically that it IS possible for us to reach other planets. There is no taboo against the discussion, it has simply been irrefutably resolved.

@MagiMysteryTour scientists do not "know" that we can never reach another solar system, thats silly no one in the related fields will say "never" we can not get there now, if they think this privately then they do not pay attention to history, but why would they? scientists are not historians "they" also said the sound barrier could never be broken, it not a taboo, its just not accurate to say that in the first place

Talking about the impossibility of reaching planets outside our solar system is a scientific taboo. Because space programs know they depend on the publc's Star Trek fantasies for massive funding. But the scientists know we can never reach other solar systems. Just don't mention it in public!

Really sexy Melon? How much research have you done into that issue?

I hope he's not using those as illustrations that taboos are necessarily unfounded.
The HIV/AIDS thing in particular is about the closest you can get to idiocy, right after "Intelligent Design".

Both would most likely result in getting discharged.

Alright the poop taboo is odd. I can tell you even after putting proper sewer lines in Iraq. We still found people shitting in the side of the building. It's more of a cultural issue then a science issue.
Now as far as the president being discharged based on his comments. I would have to know that was in fact that was why he was discharged. Also I would guess by making those comments on behalf of the university without strong evidence, it would be the same as if he said the earth was flat.
