The UKU Project (www.whareuku.com)
Whareuku is an earthen housing concept that provides rural Maori communities with a building system that is sustainable, accessible and able to provide for their housing needs. The Whareuku system uses local materials in the wall of the house (like soil and flax), uses local labour, and provides the training and materials needed to allow members of the local community to design and build Uku houses.
The Whareuku project is proud to be a part of Sustainable Habitat Challenge (SHaC09), a nationwide competition to design and build a sustainable house.
The competitions aim is to demonstrate sustainable housing ideas and methods are practical for New Zealanders. The SHaC09 competition will show that a more sustainable life is achievable and desirable. SHaC09 recognizes that the NZ public, researchers, educators, planners and industry professionals are all vital to move the country towards building sustainable housing solutions.
