DOT's "Don't Be A Jerk" bike safety ad campaign humorously highlights essential do's and don'ts of safe, responsible riding that are crucial to keeping New York City's streets as safe as they can be for everyone using them, including cyclists. The ads convey the need for bicyclists to follow the rules of the road, including always yielding to pedestrians; riding with traffic, not against it; and riding on the street, not on the sidewalks (unless rider is age 12 or younger).

"Don't Be a Jerk" is part of DOT's larger Bike Smart initiative, which includes the Bike Smart Pledge and the "LOOK" ad campaign, designed to educate cyclists and other road users about sharing the streets and roadways safely.

According to DOT's 2010 Sustainable Streets Index, commuter cycling increased 262% in New York City from 2000 to 2010.

I now want to see the reverse.

Don't Be a Jerk - walk on the side walk, not in the bike path.

I thought the punchline was going to be: you're equally a jerk if you drive a car expecting legitimate road users (ie. cyclists) to jump out of your way.

There's no safe place to drive a car either. 40,000 people a year get killed in automobile accidents, far more than cyclist fatalities. The overall health benefit of using a bike far outweighs the occurrence of injuries and fatalities among cyclists. Urban areas are the places that using a bicycle are the most beneficial.

    Come to Mercer Island.

Bike on Island Crest Way, and do not use the sidewalks.

I think you should require medical attention soon.

There are more bikes on East Mercer Way and West Mercer Way than cars.

I am not sure why that is so much less dangerous, but cars running stop signs to get on Island Crest way have something to do with it.

The fact is, there is NO safe place (on the streets) to ride a bicycle: In the road it is not safe for the bicycles, and on the sidewalks it is not safe for the pedestrians. I personally think that bicyclists are a nuisance, however, I respect their right to use the road. But bicycles (and motorcycles, mopeds, scooters, etc...) really don't belong in New York City AT ALL, unless they get rid of most of the automobile traffic, otherwise, as the old saying goes: "Somebody's going to get hurt."

12 is too young, should be 15/16. A kid who should have gone to my high school died passing a double parked delivery truck

On a side not though, those are pretty easily offended NYC pedestrians. If a bike passes me, I don't really care. I know how dangerous the streets are and as long as they pedal responsibly (not go full speed on a sidewalk but rather slow to pedestrian speed) I hope the best for them.

One of the most necessary and important traits on being a jerk is the inability for self reflection. having no conscience is important.

In fact, being self-righteous is what's necessary.
