i really feel sorry for you Melindaca2... but here's my opinion about this song...LittleIronDove is right! it's in the interpretation of the person singing... i think this song is for comfort, for those people who are down & out, who lost someone they dearly love, for people who are AFRAID to get up & get back on their feet... that's my opinion about this song, i hope you find your answers regarding this song... long live Rob & the Matchbox Twenty!!!

I am hearing impaired. I have listened to this song 5000 times, I still can't tell you what it is about. I can hear the sounds, and a few words here and there.. I have heard "soul underneath". the rest just blend together in my head. The sounds are beautiful to me, and I find it strange that so many people on here reflect death, and sadness. Leaves me confused. So I am asking if you sign to the music, depending on the variations with HP, how could you translate the true meaning to someone?

It's in the interpretation of the person signing. It's hard enough to understand "underlying meanings" and metaphors in songs even as a hearing person.. As I'm sure you know Melindaca2, you sign a concept. I have just started to learn sign language, still working on vocabulary. My first impulse is to sign exact english...but, ASL allows you to express your personal concept of the song. I enjoy music both ways, it's a beautiful form af self-expression as is signing.

Most people relate their losses with a certain song, and some songs bring back memories of the lost.

Now this song has no meaning to me really but it could be different for others. Go through some hardship in your life, then come back with some perspective.
