Max Dionisio talks about the course he teaches at the iSchool (Toronto), INF2171H Major Subject Heading and Classification Systems. This course offers a practical approach to the principles and problems of assigning Library of Congress subject headings and classification notation to both print and electronic media. Students will look at how these systems may be modified for Canadian subjects. Students learn how to: use the Library of Congress subject cataloguing, classification and shelf-listing manuals; assign notation from the full edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification as well as several LCC schedules; code into MARC records. These systems and their suitability for describing electronic materials such as YouTube clips, mp3s, video games, and other Web 2.0 media will also be discussed and evaluated. The course will be useful to those wishing to pursue a career in cataloguing or have a general interest in subject analysis.
