Ten years ago, UNC dedicated the Carolina Center for Public Service to strengthen and expand our tradition of service and engagement. The Center, created through gifts from alumni and friends, launched just in time to help North Carolina rebuild from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Floyd. Since then, the Center has continued to support students, faculty and staff as they respond to critical needs in North Carolina and far beyond: More than 2,800 Public Service Scholars have logged more than 400,000 hours of service. Homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina have been rebuilt, community vegetable gardens cultivated and elementary students mentored. In short, Carolina has helped hundreds of communities throughout North Carolina and around the world.
