University of Hawaii Noelani Apartment Dorms madness

On Oct. 15, 2006 at 7:07 AM a 6.6 magnitude earthquake and a 5.8 magnitude aftershock caused most of the state of Hawaii to lose power. By dusk at about 6:30 PM the University of Hawaii Housing Department had failed to prepare any kind of lights or emergency procedures for the low-rise apartments which have no emergency lights or generators.
By 7 PM total chaos erupted as residents of the dorms gathered on their lanais and whooped, hollered, yelled, streaked, water-ballooned, etc., etc. whoever and whatever they could.
The only thing that prevented the scene from erupting into total madness as the residents began to get drunk, belligerent and angry was a couple of people that brought out a saxophone and drum and began playing at the top of one of the stairwells between the buildings.
The music distracted the crowd until about 9:30 PM when campus security finally set up generators to power flood lights that scattered a large portion of the group. Then Campus Security did rounds on the upper floors and made the impromptu band go home and the crowd gathered to dissipate.
The music was a beautiful display of community that the Housing department in general lacks. You could see it in both the residents and the RAs that nobody was sure if the music was a good thing or a bad thing until the whole crowd, like at a concert began singing chorus lines that could be heard from other buildings nearby.

The point of the video is that nobody bothered to set up any emergency lighting even though they had all day to prepare... It was about this dark that night.

That and the video was shot on a point and shoot digital camera with 60sec. max video capabilities...
