Artie talked a lot about how he tracked down this recording in the famous Smithsonian Interview, I won't spoil it, but VERY interesting! Its a long interview, but a must for any Shaw fan,,,,

This was never recorded commercially. And there is a lot of question as to when exactly this was recorded because Artie wrote it as an intermission selection to play on stage with a small group including a "classical" string quartet, guitar, bass and drums for a musician's benefit concert in May 1936. It was before Artie had an organized band! There aren't any known recordings from the concert by Artie or anyone else who appeared, raising questions as to when this was actually recorded!!!

Can I find this recording on some vinyl or old shellac?
I looked into the Disogs database but haven't found that Shaw title in there yet! :(

This is the piece that launched Artie; before this he was a well-paid session guy. He then formed a band that flopped. Then he came back a couple of years later with the 38/39 band and blew people away. Until he got that ONE hit record, he was a minor consideration. In his case it was "Begin The Beguine".

The Artie Shaw band library and manuscript collection is are at the University of Arizona. Unfotunately, it is too far away for me.
great example of Jazz and classical music being mixed!
