I never use the 3D metering modes for actual auto focus on my Nikon D90. As somebody else pointed out though it probably helps accurately expose? Not sure if an entirely different system in the Nikon cameras is used for that.

Nikon F5, D1, D1H, D1X, D2H, D2X and so on... although they use it for exposure metering. i don't know if the D300 really used that for AF as this video suggest, i don't have that particular model.
