When Belle reveals the existence of the Beast to the village to keep her father out of the asylum, Gaston tells everyone that the Beast is a threat and this song is song. Gaston knew the Beast wasn't a threat to the village and only wanted it dead because Belle loved the Beast. The villagers fell for the lie because they're idiots.
