Santa Fe (KRQE) - Deputies want to know who shot a dog at point blank range with a bow and arrow and a gun.

Zavaria, a New Mexican Brown Dog, was brought into the Santa Fe Humane Society on Monday morning with a head wound and a broken left hind leg.

During emergency surgery on Zavaria's head, veterinarians discovered an arrow embedded in her skull.

"A three-bladed arrowhead that had broken off, or cut off, had lodged in the skull," Santa Fe Humane Society's Bill Hutchinson said.

The arrow appears to have been shot at point blank range at the dog right between her eyes.

"The exit wound is on the top of her mouth, which means someone was standing on top of this dog, with her looking right up at him, when this arrow was fired," Hutchinson said.

X-rays later showed Zavaria's broken left hind leg was the result of a gunshot wound. Veterinarians need to determine if that leg can be saved or if it will have to be amputated.

"She's sweet as could be," Santa Fe Humane Society's Executive Director Mary Martin said. "She's wagging her tail. She's coming up and licking your face. It's just so sad."

According to veterinarians, Zavaria was likely shot days ago. The owner said she ran away and came back last night with the wounds. Deputies are now searching for the person who did this.

"This is not a case, in my view, of a dog that was chasing someone's child or attacking cattle," Martin said. "This a dog that went up to somebody and was being sweet."

i would personally really like to get my hands on the persons that did this, also show this to the evoltionists and the aethiests for them to see that there is a fallen part of man and that monkeys wouldnt do this to themselves or other animals that unconditionally love them,, i beleive god gave us pets to show us a glimpse of what unconditional love can be and heres what some of us do makes me sick .

This brought tears to my eyes.....poor thing. There are some crazy ass people out there. I knew of one guy that would stick a pitch fork into a doberman's behind when he came to shit on his lawn.......I wish the owners would look after their dogs better.....and not let them run loose out there with all the crazies out there !!!
