For Heaven's Sake Joe Farrell 1968
The Elvin Jones Trio performs in the Netherlands in "De Doelen" Theatre in Rotterdam in 1968. Elvin plays drums and with bassist Jimmy Garrison they were both members of the John Coltrane Quartet in the early sixties. Here they feature the 31 year old tenor saxophonist Joe Farrell.
Joe Farrell, (1937 - 1986 ) was a jazz saxophonist and flutist.
In the 1960s Farrell played with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band. He is best known for performance with Chick Corea, in Return to Forever, as well for a series of albums under his own name on the CTI label, he also recorded with Charles Mingus, Jaki Byard and Elvin Jones.
He was heavily influenced by John Coltrane.

  • Yo...... damn.... 1968????? Farrell was SOOOOOOOOOOO ahead of his time! This shit sounds so.... MODERN! Jeez.... For those of you who think that Brecker, Garrett, Antonio Hart, and Jaleel Shaw stuff is all new and shit..... man.... you would be SURPRISED!!!!

  • Joe Farell was at his best during 1966-1975 when he played modern but always soulful with Andrew Hill and Chick Corea. Also very funky and electric on CTI. Very underrated artist.

  • Stronger and even more lyrical than ever. Met Joe thru Jaki Byard, He did a short stint with jazz bohemia in NYC. Still have his hand written copy of " The Pharoah".

  • i saw joe numerous times in the late seventies===i remember one awesome gig at mikells on 97th st in nyc ---i believe he had joe beck on guitar and mike richmond on bass

  • Brecker is still my favorite....but I'll be the first to admit that Joe Henderson, Joe Farrell, and Coltrane laid the groundwork that made what he did later possible. For the record, I have the stuff Joe Farrell did with Chick and Andrew Hill and I love that stuff, too. Joe was like an arpeggio machine, but he also played with a lot of heart.

  • Joe Farrell, quite simply... was the best, ever!

  • Joe Farell had his own sound!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, I think '68?? On the other hand, it's how timeless this sound is that's the magic of it. Stephen, thank you for keeping me musically educated. The Jazz Ravens must rise again...sometime, someplace. I miss you, and understand you better through this. You are one deep motherf%#ker.

  • YEAHHHHHH!!! All the blues and soul in Chicago got bottled up in Joe and he let it out here

He's testifyin'- testifyin' for all the failings, let-downs, rejections and unrequited loves that man ever had...

Man Oh MAN, what a sound!!!

  • Elvin and Jimmy are smiling like 'damn - this cat is baad!'

That or they're like 'holy shit this cat sounds A LOT like our old boss!' haha

    Great stuff \,,/

  • Nice performance. Thanks for posting it.

  • damn you can hear coltrane miles away!
