The first prototype of the horizontal desktop magnetic amusement device (patent: 1272231) . There are some conceptual similarities to Newton's cradle. This demonstrates the one-dimensional 'ball-and-spring model' using magnets arranged for mutual repulsion.

  • Yes, there's also the new frictionless magnetic bearings. I suspect that the needle type might have too much friction and the magnetic would be too expensive.

  • I am no bearing expert but have you heard of the 'needle' type of bearings?

Instead of balls you have rollers, in theory i'd expect them to be better for side loads, and in general they are good bearings as harder to make I believe. So they may cost...

  • Thanks for the tip about the VCR bearing. I knew the skateboard bearings weren't right, just not sure what is.

  • I was surprised it slowed as quickly as it did, not to knock the build quality or anything...

I think maybe thats the next thing for your product to conquer, this side load issue

Have you ever played with the bearing from a VCR head? they are amazing I think considering how common they are:)

  • Yes, that is an issue that I'm struggling with right now. I'm using AXIS 608 ZZ EMQ, but there are two problems, 1) not built for side load, so there is play, leading to vibrations at times, 2) grease creates friction.

    Best,

    Josh

  • very clever!

what grade bearings are you using?
