California landscape and portrait painter Fred Griffing III and Hayok Kay.

Hay Ok Kay was born Seoul, Korea in 1954 and has lived in California since 1969. She carries around with her stacks of sketch books filled with wild abstract and figurative paintings on paper.

casabasa informs me:
"Hayok was the original drummer for Polkacide but also played with a lot of girl bands around S.F. punk scene of the 80's. The apres garde probably refers to the back of a leather jacket, a collage piece with a doll's arm and the "colors" for the ApresGarde, a group of actors, artists and musicians on the San Francisco bay area scene of the 70's and 80's. She was a good friend."

Basa confirms Hayok's photo can be found near the center of the inside photo-collage liner of the classic Polkacide album featured on Polkacide's site.

That day I run into Fred and Hay ok almost literally as totally coincidentally as I'm traveling along Telegraph, Fred's truck lurches in front and cuts me off hauling a claw foot tub he's trying to sell to Urban Ore or Omega Salvage. I mention Basa's comments to Hayok. She says hi and Basa is right on. She's refered to "Hayok the thunderer" deep on Polkacide's site.

Frede Griffing III (b. 12/23/51 Oakland, CA) is a fourth generation Californian artist, pursuing the plain-air tradition pioneered by his great uncle Walter Ufer, the most successful and famous of the Taos Society artists. Griffing paints impressionistic seascapes, riverscapes, landscapes, and portraits, using oil on canvas over wood.

Their truck, in which they temporarily live since eviction from "the studio," is broke. The've been stranded in this area of Oakland for weeks, unable to sell at the flea market or haul. Fred's paintings have scattered to the wind as he and Hayok try to scrape up enough cash to buy a pump and battery. Usually Fred calls, but he vanished weeks ago, finally tracked here. The cast will come off and they eventually get on the road again.

kgreenstein writes:
"My first Fred Griffing Jr. painting I bought on ebay - "Girls Night Out" and I LOVE IT - I would call his art realistic impressionism. Bought two more of Fred's Paintings from Graves County Gallery online. I hope they let him paint and wish him the best. This video proves genius is something innate no matter what the external circumstances - Van Gogh (Griffing) in San Francisco. Keep Painting your magic Fred - We Love you!! Kathy from New York"

When Fred read this upon seeing these YouTube postings for the first time, he was transfixed.

  • I lived out there for many years...I had that look too....Poverty Stricken Cut Throat California....

  • Wild, wild, west. Enjoyed your last video--I like what the Slotins are doing. Their festivals are exciting and I consider them fine artist advocates and a hub for the outsider community. Love how you stoke things.

  • is she homeless look like it?

  • RIP you crazy bastard, Fred. You were nuts, but one hell of an artist.

  • How horribly sad that those artists are being so abused by society, police, angry disconnected persons taking their trucks and throwing them down on stairs. Instead of listening to them and hearing what they have to say to us. I find the artists inspiring, because they take their time with everything, they move slowly, they are not in a hurry like the corporate business people. They see things that are sensitive and creative. They have a lot to offer to society, we must give them a chance.

  • id like to know what hes thinking at 02:05

    very interesting video

    cheers

  • I first met Hayok Kay when she first met my old friend Ward Abronski circa 1975. They were very much in love, and I was the third wheel...happily. Hayok was vibrant, passionate and beautiful...If you see her please tell her Alex sends his love? I remember after a night of partying Hayok yelling out..."I want Kimchee, I want Rice!"...It's still my fave hangover food.

  • Yeah I feel I wouldnt want to explain my art. I think its dismisses the point of the individual interpretation which to me is part of the artistic experiance, that sensory gratification that art lends its self to. What it means to me is not what it means to you and if my work is my expresion I shouldnt have to explain it, there is a reason I didnt add words to my piece. Raw, naked expression thats how I would explain my art...if I had art to explain.

  • ***KISSING TEST***

  • why do most artists always have to explain themselves...or something. i'd just say i dont no what anything means. have no idea what my art means/cause im truley retarded.
