Vicious and deadly hippo fight in Kruger National Park - Lower Sabie, January 15th, 2010 - Part 1

Extraordinary footage of hippo fight on land. These hippos practically ran into our truck on a dark and otherwise quiet night in Kruger National Park. Both severely injured and exhausted, they fought viciously to death... unbelievable to witness, as hippos only fight under water, and very very rarely kill each other. What was even more alarming and unnatural, was the cannibalizing of the surrendering hippo. The challenging hippo continued to literally eat him alive, not walking away as most hippos would typically do. This was a gruesome, horrifying, sad, yet riveting fight to watch. They were so close to our truck, we could smell the blood. Our truck provided a quick escape when several times the hippos got dangerously close to us... Only a few hours later, when we returned to the site, the losing hippo was already but a carcass, and a pack of hyenas lazed around, their hunger truly sated.
