Jeffrey Guterman, Ph.D.:
The idea of a true love is a myth that's perpetuated in our culture. For example, the idea that there's one true love, a soul mate, if you will, in the world. And this often leads to upset because if one doesn't find their true love or they lose their so-called true love, then people can get very upset. Now, one can say there's a true love, merely define the idea of a true love arbitrarily in their mind. But when you think about it, there really is no such thing as one true love because all love is true. If you think you love, then you love. If you think you love someone, then you love them. The question is not whether it's true but what kind of love, what type of love is one experiencing, is one sharing, etcetera. So, there are many, many types of love. There's passionate love. There's platonic love. There's brotherly or sisterly love. Parental love. So, really, to get away from the idea of true love, the mythology and, instead, see that love has many variations and many types.
