I always marvel at the shuttle during a roll out. What keeps it from toppling over backwards, especially when it starts the incline up to the pad?

I hope to make the trip down to KSC from Ohio to watch either Atlantis launch on May 18th or Endeavour launch on July 29th. I've been to the space center once, but haven't gotten to see a shuttle launch. And with the shuttle fleet retiring this year... hope I get to make the trip.
