iPod Mini that I upgraded a while ago seems to have something else also wrong with it than just busted MicroDrive. Any idea what could it be?

You need a new battery, and the click wheel cable is not in all the way.

the wheel is not broken. ok read, my personal trick to fix it without buy anything from e-bay 1) press and hold middle button+ play-2)when ur screen is blank press and hold for 5 sec Middle button and "forward" till he open a secret page
3) here u find several options : a-reset default settings b-full format of ur memory c-a sort of scan disk d-headphones settings e-settings for wheel speed and sensibility (not sure if work with new i-pods mini)

try to disconnect the motherboard from the case first then reconnect it again. if this won't work, then buy a new click wheel on ebay. :))
