Andrew Parker, Professor of Oboe at University of Iowa.

This is the second movement of Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite. This excerpt is on many if not all principal oboe auditions. There are many reasons why this excellent work is always on auditions, but it should not be approached with anxiety. It is wonderfully rewarding to work on and play. It helps to develop so many aspects of your musicianship. Some of the key challenges are:

1. Execution of beautiful and tasteful low Cs
2. Understanding and conveying the dotted rhythm. It requires both a lyrical fluidity and the hint of a snappiness or crispness in the dotted feel.
3. Pacing and shaping of the line
4. Intonation (in particular the three different octave Cs. They all have minds of their own!)
5. Beauty of sound.
