The River Medlock flows through the Medlock Valley, and I thought I would show you just a small part of it's journey as it gently meanders through Clayton Vale Nature Reserve. The river has survived the industrial revolution, which made full use of local rivers, heavy pollution by factories, Mills, Dye and Print works, as well as waste tips, in fact Clayton Vale where the river runs through is built on a landfill site. While recent restoration has improved the water quality and brought back wildlife through the re-stocking of fish, it is clear that more work needs to done as chemicals are still being dumped into the river, some days you can see the water change colour, what effect this might have on the fish population I don't know, but it can't be good.
