Copper Thieves Caught in Act
On March 29, 2010 at around 3:16 a.m. Longview Police Officer T. Yates spotted two suspects stealing copper from air conditioning units at De Haven Eye Clinic at 1705 Judson Road.
Both suspects fled the scene in a 2004
Chevrolet Cavalier and Officer Yates pursued the suspects for several blocks before the driver stopped the vehicle in the 300 block of Erskine. Once stopped, both the driver and a passenger exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officer Yates pursed the driver for some distance, through several backyards, before the suspect entered the back door to his residence at 212 Bramlette Drive and ran inside. Officers continued their pursuit of the suspect, Joshua Alford, into the residence and located him hiding in a back bedroom.
Inside the suspects vehicle, officers located several air conditioner coils. Officers began to search for damaged air conditioner units in the area and found a total of thirteen air conditioner units that had been damaged at two different locations; six at De Haven Eye Clinic at 1705 Judson Road and seven at the office of Dr. Andy Mack at 3004 H.G. Mosely Parkway. The total damage to both buildings is estimated at $65,000.00.
As Officers continued their investigation, they located the second suspect who fled from Officer Yates in the vehicle earlier. This suspect was identified as a juvenile and booked into the Gregg County Juvenile Detention Center for criminal mischief (3rd degree felony) and evading arrest (Class A misdemeanor).
