Libraries are meant to be silent, and that's what visitors expect. But, sometimes rules are made to be broken. Library Employee Susan Schafer says, "All the bells started ringing and you kind of look up and wonder what's going on." That's when people poured through the aisles, ringing their bells. Then, joined together in the middle of the library to sing Christmas carols for all to hear. But, Visitors were a bit confused. One spectator says, "At first I thought it was maybe a fire alarm." Schafer says, "It was kind of one of those moments where you're just going, what is that and what is going on?"
We actually had to tell them it was a flash mob. Organizer Marilyn Ault says, "This was really pretty spontaneous. We'd seen something else on the internet that was similar and we just thought, oh wouldn't that be fun."
In fact, flash mobs have been all over the internet recently. Schafer says, "You feel like you're a part of a bigger thing. The joke used to be that Topeka is two years behind everyone else and we're right in there with everyone."
The group of community members who put on the flash mob were completely organized on the internet, and rehearsed about 20 minutes before the event for the first time.
