Last summer I made a few improvements to my M20, and this is the first time that I've run it since.

I added the M100 lineshaft with the vague idea of running a few toys from it. I decided to try the generators instead. The problem with it is that, even after end-for-ending it to gain speed rather than mechanical advantage, I'm still not getting enough RPMs to do much more than get a faint glow from the 15E generator, and AM radio on the radio (FM requires more power, don't ask me why).

I could probably daisy chain everything off the flywheel and have better results.

The primary engine PTOs use a rubber band and a spring belt. Everything else is running via waxed dental floss, which really makes for lovely low-loss drive bands.

  • Big improvement on the fire boxes. What did you use to paint them with? Did you sand off the puke pink?

  • Thanks. With the electric heated engines you can get away with plain old enamel paint.. In fact I've found hi temp paints (BBQ in particular) don't cure properly anyway on these, getting tacky when they are fired.

I didn't remove the old paint. It forms a good base, since it won't burn off electrics either.

  • You got 6 low efficiency generators to produce usable power, off of one toy steam engine. Truly amazing!

  • The Jensen 20 is a beast among toys. It just needs the proper motivation ;)

  • Nice! Some Of Your Videos Helped Inspired Me To Get One :) I Gotta Start Making Some Videos Of My Beast!

  • I should ask Jensen for a commission ;)

The 20 is really in a class of it's own. I'd say that the only thing keeping it in the toy steam category is the low operating pressure.

I know a fellow who has run one at 60PSI+. That was an impressive power generator.

  • You've got to love #20s. strongest jensen except for the #50.

  • that is insane!

  • very impressive setup!

  • I've pondered a few times the limits of standard household wiring ;)

I did fix the SV's up, though, to where they will blow at 30-35 PSI and found that this set up will maintain 25PSI while running in this configuration. I'm certainly not unhappy with that. Might also have something to do with taking the boilers off last summer to give them and the heaters a good cleaning while I was waiting for the paint to dry.
