Ask a question! MAILmachelli@gmail.com

In this episode of "ZAP!" Matthew answer the question "Why is everyone so interested in knowing who's the top and who's the bottom in a gay couple or relationship?'

what I've found is that, aside from idle interest, most people asking this question might just be trying to figure out who has the "power" in a relationship. Historically (and I'm going to be very broad here) in a straight relationship, the man was the one with the power, and the woman had very little to speak of. For that matter, she had very little to speak about. IF SHE KNEW WHAT WAS GOOD FOR HER!
So people's interest in figuring out who's the top and who's the bottom in a gay couple, I think stems from them wanting to know who's the "man" and who's the "woman."
QUICK SIDE NOTE: has anyone seen the movie RENT? Did it bug you how both of the same-sex couples in that movie had clearly defined gender roles? One, "man" and one "woman?" Did that bug you? No? Watch it again... Now answer me this: does it bug you that the movie sucks?
So, I think what it boils down to is this: we all want to fit the world into a nice, tight little box, and figuring out who is putting what into which person is part of that desire to classify things.
My question for YOU is this: have YOU ever been asked if you're a top or a bottom? Do you think straight people or gay people are more concerned with answering this question? Did you like the movie RENT? If so, why? If not, congratulations.
That does it for this Monday, I will see you all next week, and stay tuned for This Thursday and Friday for guest ZAP! Panelists who will answer this question as well.
As always, if you have questions for these ZAP!s, email me at MAILmachelli@gmail.com, and until next Monday, try to stay out of the dark!

  • Hey. I like Rent. But maybe I'm just projecting my feelings about things that were going on in my life around the time it came out onto the film.

I at least like the musical a lot. Or at least did. Until this week. My boyfriend won't stop singing songs from it. I'm getting annoyed.

  • @Juanitothegreat Has he been singing the songs for five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes straight?

  • @thamewt No. He only discovered it a week and a half ago. How many minutes is that?

  • @Juanitothegreat roughly 15,840.

  • Also, in The Sting, is Paul Newman the top or the bottom?

  • I've noticed discomfort in some vlogs with this top/bottom question. I'm not sure what the problem is. The answer will either be top, bottom, depends on chemistry, or I don't do anal sex. I think people get bent out of shape when they conflate it with gender presentation; then their answer gets all political on a question that is straightforwardly sexual.

Frankly, it's an important question if you are trying to establish sexual compatibility and one or both are polarized in either direction.

  • I love when I see a gay couple play a girl and a guy role. Most of my gay friends have feminine boyfriends. Feminine guys are amazing, and have awesome personalities. I want a boyfriend like that!. Masculine guys are cool, but they make me wet sometimes because I want them. They're so hot! Gay guys are hot! I want a boyfriend like that! Who is attracted to me, and not scared of my pussy. lol . . .

  • hey, i liked rent, however the story could have been better developed, there are maybe two or three songs that i liked but were connected to things going on in my life so i take it thats why i liked it... as always great video

  • @Juanitothegreat Yeah, but I gave one anyway. Bonus!

  • I loved the movie Rent, it was amazing music, didnt bug me so much about the defined roles because for some reason I like seeing that. I think when I saw it I was struggling with my own sexual desires and it helped me knowing there were others like me which is why it didnt bother me at all.

  • Didn't love the movie - but have seen the musical 3 or 4 times - pretty good.

I think people ask the question because they have a general curiosity about gay sex...and want to know who's the bitch...and since media portrayals prefer to show the Jack McFarland-esque characters of the world (who are likewise portrayed as being bottoms / effeminate - not saying it's true - just saying it's assumed), it can be confusing to find a couple of masculine guys I assume. Never been asked though :-)

  • @thamewt Rhetorical question did not require an answer.

  • The only person that needs to know the answer to the question "top or bottom" is the person you're about to have sex with!!

  • @ZephyrFate I have no problem if somebody says, "I think you are cute and am interested in sex. Are you a top or a bottom?" Unless a person wants to have sex with me, I think it is TMI. :-D
