@duelist1954 Showman "Pawnee Bill" had a pair of 5 1/2 Colt numbered 14844 and 14845 so I think they were from 1874 (check your e-mail - on youtube, I've sent the link)

I enjoyed your observation that having another man's name engraved on your gun is like having another man's name tattooed on your girlfriend.

I got a big question which I've never found the answer: did Colt sale all three variants of the 1873 SAA at the same time ? The most popular, the Cavalry Model (7" 1/2 barrel) came certainly in 1873 but I really don't know if the "Artillery" (5' 1/2) an "Civilian" (4' 3/4 as you know) models were later marketed or were "shortened" version of original Cavalry models.

@ChurchillCigar Yes, by 1878 all three barrel lengths were offered by Colt to civilian buyers.

@duelist1954 So they weren't marketed before 1878 ?

@ChurchillCigar I'll have to look it up to be sure, but, if I remember correctly, the 5 1/2" barrel came out in 1875 and the 4 3/4" barrel in 1878.
