Furtwangler's wartime Beethoven Ninth from March 21-24 1942.
4th movement / Finale: Allegro ma non tanto - Poco adagio - Prestissimo - Maestoso - Prestissimo (5/5)
Tilla Briem, Elisabeth Höngen, Peter Anders and Rudolf Watzke.
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
Note how the final prestissimo sounds like a descent into the abyss in the wartime, rather than the sudden burst of joyous energy in the way Furtwangler always interpreted this part.

I can't agree more. It's amazing! I feel as if I cannot catch my breath. I get the sense that Beethoven was building everything up to the finale of the finale: that the rest of the piece is outstanding, but this part is unimaginable
