This is Bradk12fan's Tribute to NASCAR pioneer and World War II Veteran Wendell Scott. Wendell originally started racing on The Dixie Circuit, a NASCAR rival, as their 'gimmick driver.' He would go on to win 127 races on the Dixie Circuit, but was never able to compete in a full season as some track promoters would not let him race.

Wendell attempted to start his 1st NASCAR race in April of 1961, but was unable to when the track promoter refused to give him $15 for gas. The next weekend Wendell met Bill France Sr., and told him what happened, Bill then pulled out his wallet and handed Wendell $30. France told him, "You a NASCAR member now, and you will never be treated like that again." Some drivers and fans grew to respect Wendell, while others would go out of their way to crash Wendell.

Wendell would receive help from several drivers including, Richard Petty, Glenn 'Fireball' Roberts, Ned Jarrett, and many others. In 1963 at Jacksonville, Florida, Wendell won by '2' laps over Buck Baker in a car bought from Ned Jarrett, with a used engine donated by the Wood Brothers, and competing with money loaned from Richard Petty. NASCAR originally flagged Buck Baker as the winner because the track promoter did not want to have Wendell kiss the white beauty queen. Wendell protested and several hours later was awarded with the win, and the winnings, while Buck Baker kept the trophy and the acclaim of fans. NASCAR would later admit that Wendell was 3 laps ahead of Buck Baker, as Wendell said.

Wendell would continue to race and in 1973 would be caught up in a 24 car melee. Some say that Wendell was wrecked on purpose. Speculation aside, the wreck nearly killed Wendell, and effectively ended his NASCAR career.

Any derogatory, discrimitory, or racist comments will immediately be removed, no questions asked.

  • @bradk12fan I want nothing more to restore a car driven by Wendall. I see the latest has already been taken. I want the crown jewel of his career. The Chevrolet he drove to victory December 1, 1963 at Jacksonville, FL. It has long been time to reconize Wendall Scott on the track. My only wish after completion of the restoration is it will be shown at a few Sprint Cup events, maybe drove around a few tracks he raced at, and maybe, fingers crossed parked in the Hall of Fame. A true pioneer.

  • This is the best Wendell Scott tribute I have seen here on youtube. Thank you for a great tribute. Nascar really needs to recognize him and his accomplishments better.

  • wow awsome song that blends well to this tribute for the great wendell scott

  • @davidmorris67

About 5 years ago their was a website where this dude actually bought 1 race car and his work truck from his home yard...I emailed him but got no reply.

  • @flimflamracin Well, it depends on how you look at it. Just because of how Buck treated Wendell and his family shouldn't change anything. Buck was a champion, and that will never change.

  • @bradk12fan Guess I'd be embarrassed to have the last name of Baker.

  • @davidmorris67 You laugh, but I think they still have some of his old cars in the weeds behind his old house in Danville.

  • @flimflamracin Yeah, Buck always maintained that he had earned and won that trophy. Buck would even bring it to the track to taunt Wendell. It was only the threat of a lawsuit against the Baker family in early 2010 that led Buddy, with the help of NASCAR and ESPN, to give the trophy to the Scott family.

  • So the Bakers kept that Jacksonville trophy all that time???

  • Love this video, and am a big fan of Wendell..I have every pic i could find of him on my race shop wall. Wendell was "the man"!

  • @andersport Thanks, and Wendell didn't only lay the foundation for the drivers you listed, but he also inspired many others, including myself, although I only drive modifieds, legends, banderlaros, and go-karts. I'm a minority driver, I'm not black, but I am Jewish, and as far as I know, I'm the only one that races

  • When you watch Lewis Hamilton, Bubba Stewart, Antron Brown or Harold Martin remember this man. He layed the foundation for them.GREAT VIDEO, GREAT TRIBUTE TO A UNSUNG HERO.
