Issued in Canada October 1972 on A&M 330.

Keith Hampshire was born in London, England. His family emigrated to Canada when he was a toddler, settling in Calgary. While growing up, Keith took vocal lessons, sang in a church choir and soaked up music on the radio. At age seventeen, he was performing in coffee houses. He put together various bands, and played around Calgary, appearing on TV and opening for Roy Orbison at the Stampede Corral.

After high school, Keith was hired at CFCN radio and TV, and wound up with an airshift on weekends after midnight. He and a friend went to England in 1966, where Keith was hired as a DJ by pirate station Radio Caroline. He became a major star there, until the day before the British government took measures to shut down the station in mid-August 1967. Keith then returned to Toronto, where he turned down an offer from CHUM to work at CKFH. After a couple of years, he began work in television.

Bill Misener, ex-Paupers, (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUUyXDMOBZg ) was a staff producer at RCA in Toronto. He worked with Keith on one single in 1970 that flopped. RCA passed on further records, but Keith and Bill worked out a new arrangement of "Daytime Night-Time," written by Mike Hugg of Manfred Mann. They placed it with A&M Canada, and had a hit out of the box. It entered the RPM 100 on October 28, 1972, and rose to spend three weeks at #5 in January 1973. It remained on the charts until the end of February.

  • i was born 1072 don't know this song well

  • @TheShyguy2010

You're 939 years old? Really? I guess with all the things you've seen and heard, missing out on one tune is pretty trivial stuff. What was the Norman Conquest like? Did you know Plato? Back when they played rock music (on rocks), how could you tell if you didn't like a song?

  • Another great AM song. Always wanted to dance to this in school. That is one amazing voice and base track.

  • Awesome pick-up JessieSoul, he does sound like David Clayton-Thomas.

  • Keith was also a DJ on Radio Caroline (The Boat That Rocked)

  • Always liked Hampshire. Still remember him as the host of Music Machine back in the seventies.

  • Another of the BIG CKLW hits I listened to as a child in Detroit! Big time operator rocks to! BIG THANKS to Mojofilter02 for posting this and Tom Middleton's songs! I searched for years to find Tom M's Todd remake. Bought Keith's greatest hits on CD a few years ago. I'm a big TROOPER fan to. Oh yea..LIGHTHOUSE rocks forever! Love those Canadian people! Tony P.

  • One of my many early 70's childhood memories' hit songs. This was originally written by Mike Hugg (as credited in brackets on label), one of the original members of British 60's pop/beat group, Manfred Mann.

  • Thanks for sharing these great tunes. It brings back some great memories.Man , I loved the 70s!
