In my school its quite the opposite, the to put it politely kids that do not do as well academically get all the special treatment and the smart kids just get looked over and taken advantage of as a bump on the league tables.

In Year 8 my english class kicked up a mega fuss because everyone else got to go on trips and we were the only class which didn't. We only got one in the end, to Buckfast Abbey which has nothing to do with anything. History, but no one really learnt anything...
