RENT, the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history, played for 5,123 performances and 16 previews at the Nederlander Theatre before closing September 7, 2008. The Broadway and touring productions combined have grossed over $645 million. Two RENT films were released: a Hollywood feature and a recording of the Broadway show featuring its final cast.
Written by Jonathan Larson and directed by Michael Greif, RENT won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama in addition to 4 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical. Inspired by Puccini's La Bohème, RENT tells the story of a group of young artists struggling in New York's East Village in the early 1990s and the obstacles they face, including AIDS, homelessness, poverty, lack of healthcare, and homophobia.
The show follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Collins, and Angel; Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording the events but never playing a part.
